The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN) was formed out of a conviction to have a platform for the entrenchment and sustenance of the wellbeing of older persons in Nigeria. Registered with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on the 6th September, 2016. A Coalition of all Associations; Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, Faith Based Organizations; working with Ageing, and Retired Senior Citizens groups. Each group working on its own has not produced the type of synergy that is needed to get government and other stakeholders to do something about the structural marginalization, neglect and exclusion of the Ageing and older persons from National Development Plans and Initiatives.
The Coalition was convinced that a legal framework was needed to backup any effort in the advocacy for the care of the elderly. The Coalition set itself the task of coming up with a Bill that would address all the known Rights, Privileges and Issues and Concerns of the elderly. Finally, COSROPIN came up with Draft Bill proposal - “A Bill for an Act to provide certain Rights and Privilege for Older Persons in order to ensure Health and Economic relief and protection for their Social and Civil Rights and for other matters connected thereto”. This Proposed Bill was formally presented to the Senate President by the Coalition on the 29th of March 2018, it was earlier given to the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development. The Coalition has also been involved in public Hearings at the National Assembly in two other Bills affecting Older Persons. The Coalition is very active in advocacy of better life for Older Persons and is involved in seminars, conferences and activities towards Ageing and Older Persons’ wellbeing. It works with Government and Stakeholders to eradicate elderly persons’ abuse, neglect and disrespect. COSROPIN participated in the UN meeting with Stakeholders on Ageing in Nigeria. COSROPIN is also encouraging and sensitizing the political parties to include Older Persons welfare and wellbeing in their programs. The Coalition also participated in the Stakeholders Group on Ageing (SGA) Africa Conference, which took place November 5 -7, 2018 at Sheraton Hotel Abuja.
